This paper develops more effective strategies in managing academic study in western educational contexts. Proficiency is enhanced in areas such as listening, reading and note taking. Learners are made aware of features of academic texts. The description and comparison of information is explored in the development of writing skills.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Upper Intermediate Level
    By the end of this level the student will be starting to use and understand complex language in familiar situations, although language use and understanding will still be marked by inaccuracy and misunderstanding. The student should cope with overall meaning in most social situations and should be able to cope reasonably well in their own field of interest or work. The student is likely to need another 6 months full-time English study to reach the minimum requirement to enter an undergraduate programme in a New Zealand university.
